Becoming Aware of Your Ladder of Inference

To see if you’re making an inference, ask yourself this simple but powerful question: “Did the person say or write those words exactly? If not, what exact words differ from how I’m thinking about it?” When you identify the gap between what the person said and the conclusions you’ve drawn, you have identified the inferences you made.

Identifying this gap is challenging work. You need to listen carefully to what others are saying so that you can accurately remember the key words and not change them. You also need to monitor your own thought process. The more you practice this, the easier it gets.

Keep in mind that just because you’ve make an attribution or other inference, that doesn’t mean it’s incorrect, either. It simply means you can’t know whether it’s accurate without asking the person in question. That’s the purpose of the behavior—to make sure you’re making an informed choice before you act on information that may not be accurate.
